%T The influence of smoking on sex differences in life expectancy at age 0, 65 and 80 in The Netherlands in 1950 - 2009

%X Objective: The aim of this research is to get insight into the sex differences in life expectancy at age 0, 65 and 80 in The Netherlands in the period 1950-2009, and to get insight into the contribution of smoking behavior to these differences. Methods: Using all-cause mortality rates and non-smoking related mortality rates, life tables were calculated for people aged 0, 65 and 80 for each year in the period 1950-2009. The obtained life expectancy numbers were compared with each other. Results: The life expectancy gap between men and women aged 0, 65 and 80 has increased and decreased over the period 1950-2009, while the contribution of smoking to this gap has decreased for people aged 0 and 65, and has increased and later decreased for people aged 80.
