A pilot study among citizens in the urban area of Groningen %U https://frw.studenttheses.ub.rug.nl/2408/ %X This research focuses on perceptions and preparedness of impacts of climate change and earth quakes among citizens of the urban area of Groningen. It focuses on flooding, heat waves, extreme weather and earthquakes. The study seeks to find out whether there are differences in perception of risks based on education level of the respondents, as well as it measures the level of preparedness against these threats, based on both perception and indicators by the safety region. Respondents were less prepared than they think they are, even though they already perceive themselves not to be so well prepared. Respondents perceived risks of threats which occur more often in the research area higher than risks of threats which occur less often. Authorities have serious issues in reaching and convincing citizens to take measures and be prepared for potential natural disasters, as they need their citizens to become more resilient and less vulnerable.
