Stimulating and obstructing conditions. A case study of Europapark and the SuikerUnie terrain in Groningen. ispublished: pub full_text_status: public abstract: Citizens are increasingly involved in urban development processes and policymaking is more focused on bottom-up approaches. This research aims to give insight in why self-organization occurs in practice and which conditions stimulate or obstruct the process of self-organization in the urban context. The case study in the context of Groningen compares processes of self-organization in a temporary and a permanent situation. There are different debates going on about self-organization and self-organization is explained in different ways. In practice, on the macro-level economical drivers affect the process of self-organization. Also political and societal drivers play a role. On a project scale, conditions like, funding, interests, competences and ability, the institutional context, spatial conditions and the achievement of a momentum stimulate or obstruct the process of self-organization. It is recommended, the local government, the market and the society should more engage in dialogue to develop urban areas together. date: 2015 date_type: published thesis_type: master degree_programme: EIP tutors_name: Gugerell, Dipl.-Ing.
