abstract: The aim of this research is to get a better understanding of the attachment to ‘place’ and to continue the research that has been done in this field. This research aims to find whether town-planning features contribute to place attachment or not, and whether living in an historical city centre would enhance peoples place attachment. In order to achieve this objective, a social research has been conducted using the historic city centre of Amersfoort and the non-historic city centre of Almere as case studies. This research shows that people highly value historic architecture and town-planning features. Furthermore a correlation has been found between value given to architectural and town-planning features and inhabitants’ their own place attachment. Another finding in this research suggests that the historic characteristics of the city centre do directly influence inhabitants’ physical place attachment, but do not influence social place attachment.
