%T Promotion of sustainable housing in the United Kingdom and lesson drawing for social housing policy in Nicagargua %D 2012 %A Thelma Vanegas %L theses_frw2789 %X In Nicaragua, due to the housing shortage, policy, strategies and direct actions related to social housing are set as priority and aim at providing just a ‘decent roof’ for low income population. The government had launched massive projects for new social housing, which represent a large share of new construction nationwide. Considerations related to the ‘Triple Bottom Line’ approach to sustainable development (economic, environment and social dimension) have not yet perceived enough attention mostly because of time and budget constraints. This construction boom place a strain on natural environment, by being responsible for a significant share of energy use, resource consumption, and waste generation. By contrast, steps towards sustainability have been taken in the United Kingdom. Frameworks and guidelines such as the Sustainability Communities Program and the Code for Sustainable Homes are cases of study, and a source of lesson drawing for Nicaragua context.
