German and Dutch policies regarding sustainable heating are compared. Sustainable heating can be achieved through implementing the Trias Energetica: Saving energy, using sustainable sources and using fossil fuels as efficiently as possibe. Germany has important advantages in this respect. These are among others, consistent policies, large investments, familiarity with district heating and local utility works. In contrast the author argues that there exists a lock-in situation in the Netherlands with regard to fossil fuels. This is both because of the natural gas deposits and Dutch colonial heritage which lead to the founding of large petrochemical corporations. The Netherlands have an advantage in the form of high population density. This makes a heating network more cost-effective. It is recommended that the Netherlands start building a heating network in most promising areas, re-establish local energy companies and that the EU sets more ambitious objectives. date: 2012 date_type: published thesis_type: master degree_programme: EIP tutors_name: Ike, P. tutors_name: Kann, F. van keywords_local: Beleisdvergelijking keywords_local: Beleid keywords_local: Duurzaamheid keywords_local: Duurzame Verwarming keywords_local: Duurzame Energie keywords_local: Nederland keywords_local: Duitsland language_iso: en titleorder: Sustainable Heating: Comparing Dutch and German Policies dbi: 503f419ec1b2a imported_item: yes date_of_import: 2020-04-22 imported_from: http://scripties.frw.eldoc.ub.rug.nl/root/ma/EIP/2012/ephofstra/ import_source_file: theses-frw-20200422132453-503f419ec1b2a.xml date_issued: 2012-01-01 citation: Hofstra, E.P.
