Measurements are needed to reduce the vulnerability of local communities and to make them resilient when a flood actually occurs. The capacity of the local community to cope with flooding determines the resilience of a place. However, there is a knowledge gap, because there is a lack of knowledge that enables the shift towards flood resilience. Therefore new government arrangements are needed to acquire institutional capital to govern for flood resilience, in the form of intellectual, social and political capital. One of the examples to make coastal cities more resilient to flood is the development of floating communities. London and Rotterdam are two cities where floating communities are being developed. They provide the case studies to assess how institutional capital can contribute to flood resilience in urban areas. date: 2015 date_type: published thesis_type: master degree_programme: EIP tutors_name: Restemeyer, B. tutors_name: Van den Brink, M.A. keywords_local: Flood risk management keywords_local: Floating communities keywords_local: Flood resilience keywords_local: Institutional capital keywords_local: Harbour regenerations keywords_local: Climate change language_iso: en titleorder: Developing Floating Communities: A comparative research to examine flood resilience in cities, considered from an institutional capacity approach dbi: 5566f3cd8a1de imported_item: yes date_of_import: 2020-04-22 imported_from: http://scripties.frw.eldoc.ub.rug.nl/root/ma/EIP/2015/mlleijstra/ import_source_file: theses-frw-20200422132454-5566f3cd8a1de.xml date_issued: 2015-01-01 description_company: Rijksuniversiteit Groningen citation: Leijstra, M.L.
