This research investigated if and how the theory of environmental design can improve the perception of safety on railway stations in the city of Groningen, using field observations, questionnaires and an interview. It has been found that the three aspects ‘activity support’, having a clean and well maintained railway station during the day, and proper lighting after dark, are the most important aspects of environmental design for the perception of safety of users of the railway stations. The aspects ‘physical barriers’ and ‘security at the entrance’ are unimportant. With these adjustments, the theory of environmental design is applicable for creating a better perception of safety for users of the railway stations, although social influences and influences of the direct surrounding environment also have an important impact. date: 2015 date_type: published thesis_type: master degree_programme: EIP tutors_name: Weitkamp, S.G. keywords_local: spatial planning keywords_local: railway stations keywords_local: perception of safety keywords_local: environmental design keywords_local: travellers perception keywords_local: Groningen language_iso: en titleorder: Environmental design and the perception of safety - An adjusted model for railway stations dbi: 560bb3b27c72b imported_item: yes date_of_import: 2020-04-22 imported_from: http://scripties.frw.eldoc.ub.rug.nl/root/ma/EIP/2015/hdvanharten/ import_source_file: theses-frw-20200422132454-560bb3b27c72b.xml date_issued: 2015-01-01 citation: Harten, H.D. van (2015) Environmental design and the perception of safety - An adjusted model for railway stations.
