abstract: For several decades there has been scientific research on increasing safety and the perception on safety using spatial measures, called environmental design. This research investigated if and how the theory of environmental design can improve the perception of safety on railway stations in the city of Groningen, using field observations, questionnaires and an interview. It has been found that the three aspects ‘activity support’, having a clean and well maintained railway station during the day, and proper lighting after dark, are the most important aspects of environmental design for the perception of safety of users of the railway stations. The aspects ‘physical barriers’ and ‘security at the entrance’ are unimportant. With these adjustments, the theory of environmental design is applicable for creating a better perception of safety for users of the railway stations, although social influences and influences of the direct surrounding environment also have an important impact.
