        abstract = {Fishery-dependent communities deal with a changing economic context in which the primary sector becomes less relevant, by for example technological innovations. Within such a changing context, tourism is often applied as an economic diversification tool and subsequently a regional development strategy.  In the present study is tourism considered as economic diversification tool for regional development in the case study of Zoutkamp and region. Tourism is a fragmented sector, for it consists of multiple stakeholders who are fragmented over multiple scalar-levels and sectors. Thus, tourism destinations are complex. Building on a relational thinking and an evolutionary economic geography (EEG) framework, this thesis shows that tourism development in rural areas that are historically connected to fishing has the opportunity for synergistic effects because the economic and socio-cultural impacts possibly strengthen each other.},
