abstract: Gentrification is a process which can be construed by several interpretations, influenced by many factors and measured by several ways. This study focuses on the process of commercial gentrification, generating an insight on the quantitative (amount) and qualitative (variety) dynamics regarding business activity in a gentrifying neighbourhood for the four main cities of the Netherlands (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht). By using five indicators to construct a ‘stage model of gentrification’ in which every possible gentrifying neighbourhood has been positioned, a difference could be made between the least- and most gentrifying neighbourhoods of each city. Eventually, a greater understanding has been generated for the subject of business dynamics in neighbourhoods which gentrify in different amounts, by researching two ‘representative’ neighbourhoods per city for every stage in the ‘stage model of gentrification’.
