title: Migration to depopulating regions: the case of the Achterhoek

abstract: The main objective of this study is to determine what motivates people to move from their previous municipality into a depopulating region and discover if these motivations can be related to socioeconomic and demographic characteristics of the migrant. The area under investigation is the Achterhoek, a depopulating region in the eastern part of the Netherlands. A questionnaire was completed by 400 migrants migrating from outside the Achterhoek to one of its municipalities. It became clear that the most mentioned reason for migrating to the Achterhoek were reasons related to the rural idyll, family or cohabitation. Logistic regression models revealed that age, civil status, education, income, previous living experience and current municipality can all be related to certain migration motivations. Moreover, this research is the first to reveal (small) differences between the motivations of migrants who were and were not aware of the fact that they migrated to a depopulating region.
