Literature on resilience acknowledges the importance of connection to place and claims that place attachment is often at the basis of community development; however prior to this study this relationship has never been explored in great detail. This research question of this paper is: “What is the influence of place attachment on rural (community) resilience?” This research has revealed a direct bilateral connection between place attachment and individual resilience. There is however no direct positive relationship between individual- and community resilience. The connection between place attachment and community resilience is interfered by the personal history with the place. A strong connection to the land can have both positive as well as negative influences on place attachment, leading to the recognition of a division between preservative – and adaptive place attachments. date: 2012 type: Thesis type: NonPeerReviewed format: text language: en identifier: https://frw.studenttheses.ub.rug.nl/3043/1/Zwiers_S._-_place_attachment_v_1.pdf identifier: Zwiers, S.
