abstract: In this thesis I offer insights into how locals in Hooghalen and Westerbork, two villages in the Dutch Province of Drenthe, live with/at the dark tourism site of the former Holocaust transit camp Westerbork I employed in-depth, semi-structured interviews, in combination with photo-elicitation discussions. All in all 16 people were interviewed, 8 locals from Hooghalen, 6 locals from Westerbork, and 2 employees at the remembrance centre. Main findings of this study are the following. First, locals experience their two villages as ‘normal’ as on a daily basis they live without thinking about the atrocities which happened there. Second, most locals have visited camp Westerbork multiple times and consider it a place which evokes emotional responses like disbelief, sorrow and anger. Third, locals feel positive about tourists, as visitation of the site means that the atrocities of the Holocaust will never be forgotten.
