        abstract = {The greater Orlando region has passed through the four stages of a transition during its transformation from rural citrus producing region to theme park capital of the world. Wartime investments and progressive local leadership destabilised the region. Post-war growth was eventually overwhelmed by Walt Disney World?s impacts on the region. WDW fuelled a change toward a tourism economy.  In the early 2000s, new developments have arisen, which might be the predevelopment for another transition. Orlando leaders are expecting biomedical science to lead a new transition toward a more diverse economy, as well as more efforts to preserve liveability and natural resources. Results of this study indicate that the biomedical sciences have the potential to create smarter growth. However, the institutional framework that is in place does not support this. In the greater Orlando area, no holistic strategy is used, but efforts are localised, fragmented, and disconnected.},
