abstract: Identity is a relational and intersectional meaning making process. This research focusses on the identity formation processes of second generation British Muslims living in Newcastle Upon Tyne, United Kingdom (UK). This thesis aims to explore the ways places beyond the borders of the UK can influence their identities. A qualitative method is conducted in which semi-structured in-depth interviews and geo-egocentric maps form the data collection instruments.  Some of the key findings of this research suggest that two type of places beyond the UK influence the identities of second generation British Muslims: Places (often the villages) were the parents originate from and religious places such as Mecca. Furthermore, ties to places beyond the UK are often perceived as an enrichment of their identities and the childhood seems to be an important period in which that parts of identity informed by places beyond the UK cause feelings of exclusion.
