description: The concept of rightshoring has recently been proposed to put a new perspective on related, but unidirectional phenomena such as backshoring. Within rightshoring, the decision-making process of firms is central. As the concept is in its infancy, this study aims to progress the rightshoring concept. This study divides the decision-making process into two phases: the initial offshoring decision and the consecutive decision-making process. Both phases have been integrated into a decision-making model, in which five general elements have been identified, knowingly: 1) the business strategy, 2) competitive advantage, 3) the location decision, 4) the governance decision and 5) human behaviour. These elements were examined empirically through a qualitative analysis of decision-making processes of three currently offshoring firms within the manufacturing industry. The findings suggest that the firm’s decision-making process is very complex in nature, dependent on an interplay of various firm-specific and environmental factors that are more or less influenceable.
