Seeking for alternatives, innovative and nature-based solutions became one of the main challenges of urban planners to mitigate air pollution and optimize the quality of life. 412 structured questionnaires with citizens of the Ruhr Valley and 3 semi-structured interviews with experts from the planning department were conducted to analyze the relationship between urban dwellers and their level of awareness towards air pollution and urban green infrastructure. The results show that most of the participants are aware of urban air pollution, however not about the long-term exposure and the resulting health effects. A similar conclusion can be drawn regarding Urban Green Infrastructure, whereas people do acknowledge its aesthetical value, but not its benefits for the environment and physical health. Therefore, a close cooperation between citizens and experts is inevitable to achieve sustainable and healthy cities. date: 2020 pages: 32 thesis_type: bachelor degree_programme: SGP tutors_name: Osborne, T. tutors_organization: Fac.
