TY - UNPB TI - Area-based adaptive planning practice and ecosystem-based management. A comparative analysis of cold-water coral ecosystems in Norway and Chile UR - https://frw.studenttheses.ub.rug.nl/3311/ M1 - master AV - public N2 - This thesis focuses on the cold-water corals (CWCs) D.dianthus and L. pertusa in the Trondheim fjord in Norway and the Comau fjord in Chile. The CWCs are complex adaptive systems in an open system, which needs adaptive planning and ecosystem-based management in order to balance ecological and socio-economic interests. The goal of the thesis is to shed light on the importance of CWC ecosystems and to help to improve existing planning and management strategies in order to create a better balance between use and protection. The results of the thesis will show that the Norwegian area-based planning of the Trondheim fjord does include protected areas and zoning plans. It does also include restrictions for fisheries and specific gears, a high public awareness of the issues and a planning practice that relies on the inclusion of stakeholders, scientific research and education. In Chile the situation is different due to less funding an little research. Little stakeholder involvement and collaboration are issues, that stand in the way of successful planning and management practices in the Comau fjord. In the end a 6- step strategy for area-based adaptive planning and marine ecosystem-based management is introduced, which can help to improve the current planning and management strategies.
