To tackle these complex problems, innovative strategies are needed. This thesis analyses how tiny houses can be used by local governments as a strategy to tackle urban planning issues by means of interviewing participants from five Dutch tiny house initiatives. The study focuses on the role of local governments in the emergence of tiny house initiatives, how existing and potential tiny house initiatives influence governmental thinking and how Dutch tiny house initiatives are influenced by the Tiny House Movement. The results show that tiny houses are successful in tackling urban planning issues, varying from problems faced on the housing market to the large ecological footprint of housing. The results also show that a facilitative local government is crucial for the emergence of tiny house initiatives and that existing and potential tiny house initiatives influence governmental thinking.
