abstract: This research is about the use of rainwater in urban domestic gardens in the Oranjebuurt, Groningen. The main research question is: how are domestic gardens in the Oranjebuurt (Groningen) designed regarding rainwater harvesting methods and is there room for change? To answer the question a qualitative research strategy is used. The data is gathered by structured interviews. In total eight people are interviewed. Most of the participants were already working on designing their garden in an appropriate way for rainwater. Less pavement and more vegetation in the garden were both the most frequently mentioned. The main reasons for this were environmental factors. The most important reason to have a rain barrel or pond was domestic use. Two participants were in the possession of a rain barrel/pond, but none of the participants had a green roof; so there is still room for change. A grant of the local government might stimulate more people to use rainwater harvesting methods. Among the participants in the research, this would be the case for a green roof but not for a rain barrel. In general it can be said that the people of the Oranjebuurt in this research already have quite rainwater friendly gardens and want to improve this further in the future.
