Although there has been a sufficient amount of research into counter-urbanisation, the effect it has on the local inhabitants of rural areas has not explicitly been investigated. The aim of this research, therefore, is to investigate the effect of counter-urbanisation on local residents of rural areas in the municipalities of Olst-Wijhe and Zwolle, the Netherlands. This research was done in the form of a case study into Windesheim, Herxen, Harculo and Hoog Zuthem, which are hamlets in the province of Overijssel and the municipalities of Olst-Wijhe and Zwolle. In-depth interviews were done with seven local residents of the aforementioned hamlets. The findings show that in general local residents do not have considerable problems with in-migrants from the urban areas. It is, however, expected that an in-migrant makes an effort to integrate into the community. Local residents are often largely attached to their place of residence, but are still welcoming towards in-migrants. The influx of in-migrants, however, does cause rural gentrification. Houses become only available for higher-income households, often coming from the city. date: 2021 pages: 70 thesis_type: bachelor degree_programme: SGP tutors_name: Boumans, B.M. tutors_organization: Fac.
