%T Regional differences in loneliness among Polish migrants in the Netherlands: The impact of environmental factors

%X This study focuses on the impact of environmental factors on the variation of loneliness among  Polish migrants in the Netherlands. Data stems from the Families of Poles in the Netherlands  (FPN) survey, Statistics Netherlands, and manually obtained data. Several environmental factors  that may be related to neighbourhood attachment and social cohesion, which function as  protective factors against loneliness, were included in the study. Results of a linear regression  analysis show that proximity of other Polish migrants, socio-economic deprivation, the share of  owner-occupied housing, and perceived quality of roads, paths, and squares in a region have a  negative impact on loneliness among Polish migrants. By contrast, the degree of ethnic diversity  in a region has a positive impact on loneliness. These findings indicate the important impact of  environmental factors on the variation of loneliness and the need for further research into the  impact on loneliness on a smaller regional scale and of other possible environmental factors.  When this impact is clear, policymakers can take this into account in interventions to combat  loneliness
