This study analyses the consequences of a mega sport event on transport equity. The case study is the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, with a Bus Rapid Transit system as one of its Legacy Projects. Since its goal was to improve the mobility of the urban poor, this study focuses on vertical equity. Residents’ perceptions were studied during five in-depth semi-structured interviews. The findings suggest that at the start of the implementations, the BRTs offered many benefits to its users, especially with regards to travel time, user safety and accessibility, thereby adding to transport equity. However, a few years after the Games, the condition of the stations and buses has deteriorated in such a way that most positive effects have disappeared, making place for negative effects. Both previous research and data from the interviews suggest that political interests and short-term planning have played a role in this. Future research should continue investigating how the situation evolves in the future, specifically after the current COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, a solution has to be found for residents who depend on Bus Rapid Transit in their daily mobility. date: 2021 pages: 19 thesis_type: bachelor degree_programme: SGP tutors_name: Dijk, T. van tutors_name: Kuper, B.J. tutors_organization: Fac.
