This study establishes a comparative case study of local citizen-initiatives aiming to contribute to a more sustainable and self-sufficient local food system in Reunion Island. Local Sustainable Initiatives (LSIs) and their current food system are analyzed, as well as their interaction with institutions, using a model developed on the basis of theoretical insights. Institutional policies and subsidies promoting these types of initiatives were gathered through a content review, while in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with members of three initiatives. Results show that LSIs are embedded in a wider mentality shift and aim to accumulate production across initiatives to create food security at an island scale. Lastly, although some subsidies are available, the LSIs remain wary of the meddling of institutions with their work. date: 2021 pages: 32 thesis_type: bachelor degree_programme: TP tutors_name: Lamker, C.W. tutors_organization: Fac.
