abstract: Humans keep getting older and the proportion of these people keeps rising as well. Research shows that people reaching retirement ages of 65+ do not prepare for loss of independence at older ages. This poses problems as governments cannot provide enough care for all elderly people in need of care and thus asks civilians to care for each other instead of asking governments for help. This thesis shows with a qualitative approach using in-depth interviews that young older adults aged 55-70 are not prepared for loss of independence when they grow older while they should be as help from government is limited and will be in the future, and they reach ages where problems with social networking, health and mobility become more frequent. Awareness of, and preparation for loss of independence at older ages is largely determined by one's own identity, composed of life experiences and living environment.
