Street furniture is part of the streetscape and both can be sustainable. This research aimed to discover the effect that sustainable street furniture has on the perception of the streetscape in the inner city of Groningen. A mixed-method approach was used in this research. Quantitative data was gathered by observatory measurements by the author, in combination with a questionnaire to which pedestrians responded. The questionnaire contained questions about the current streetscape perception and questions about how the streetscape is perceived if sustainable street furniture were to be added. Results indicate that sustainable street furniture has a positive effect on the perception of streetscapes. Qualitative data explained that adding street furniture is not always desired. A combined analyses suggests that adding sustainable street furniture only has a positive effect under the right circumstances. However, additional research is required to better understand the possible difference in perception caused by day- and night time, as well as the effect on different street typologies. ER -
