In this period, US mortality rates were increasing across states, however, not all states have the same developments in life expectancy. In the southeast and up northwards are relatively low values and, in the north-central region and southwest relatively high values of life expectancy. This thesis aims to describe how US life expectancy has developed and which age groups and causes of death contributed the most to developments in life expectancy, which are analyzed using age- and cause-specific decomposition models. The results show that for the states with the lowest life expectancy one pattern in the mortality disadvantage is visible in the age groups. The states with the highest life expectancy show two patterns in the age groups in reaching the mortality advantage. The causes of death which contribute the most to the gap in life expectancy show similarities between the states with the highest and lowest life expectancy, in which especially causes of death I00-I99 (Diseases of the circulatory system) and V01-Y89 (External causes of morbidity and mortality) are big contributors to the gap, however, also all states have different other causes of death which contribute to the gap. Geographical inequality has increased when looking at the states with the highest and lowest life expectancy, which is related to differences in socioeconomic status, policies, context, composition and lifestyle.
