description: Rules imposed by the EU to clamp down on funding to unprofitable regional airports have been met with criticism from regional stakeholders stressing the role of air connectivity in generating economic growth. Evidence on positive economic spillovers from air traffic is limited to major hub airports in metropolitan areas, rising the question whether connectivity provided by regional airports can be just as crucial in generating economic benefits. Only in predominantly sparsely populated and peripheral regions, regional airports are found to be essential in providing connectivity. A growth of air traffic at regional airports has not been found to be generating regional economic growth in the long term, due to a fickle competitive arena dominated by low-cost carriers. When arguments regarding economic growth in the debate on funding regional airports are dismissed, different trade-offs will arise and the policy debate will be more balanced.
