To investigate this, a case study was done on the Lindewijk 2 project. This is done with the method of in-depth interviews. These interviews were conducted with policy makers of the Lindewijk 2 project, older adults who did participate in the participation process, and older adults who did not. Several results were drawn from the analysis of the interviews. First, it emerged that the policy makers of the Lindewijk 2 project involved older adults in the participation process by giving them an opportunity to take part in sessions where they can ask questions and give comments. However, the level of engagement from the older adults during the sessions was low. This had two main reasons: the advertisement of the sessions and the sessions were held online. Not all older adults have access or experience using the internet. Older adults would like to be reached in-person. Therefore, the total target group was not being reached. In addition, older adults often have no current desire to relocate. This has to do with their attachment to their current home. These factors cause older adults to take little initiative during the participation process. This while they do have many desires, such as the location, the layout of the house, living on the same floor and more small desires that are of great value to older adults. An example of this is that the doors within the house should be wide enough so that older adults can pass them with a walker. By addressing all these desires and making use of the possibilities, there is an opportunity for planners and developers to benefit from the participation of older adults. Therefore, planners and developers need to work to reach them in-person as rather than only online. In this way, older adults could play a major role in the participation process of the spatial planning for a new housing estate. ER -
