%T How the worms in Amsterdam benefit the social cohesion

%X This research aims to investigate to what extent the social cohesion in Amsterdam can benefit through the implementation of worm hotels. The central question of this research is: “To what extent do the worm hotels in Amsterdam benefit the locally experienced social cohesion?” Literature shows that one of the main goals of bottom-up projects, like the worm hotels, is to increase social interactions in a neighborhood (von Schönfeld and Tan, 2021), and that these interactions will be very important for creating a better social cohesion within a neighborhood (Granovetter, 1973). The data for this research is obtained by semi-structured interviews with five users of three different worm hotels and a municipal official. This research concludes that the worm hotels do benefit the social cohesion within neighborhoods of Amsterdam in general, but not as much as initially expected. This is concluded after analyzing the impact of the worm hotels on the factors: social inclusion, social capital and social mobility.
