Bongaarts’ framework for analyzing the proximate determinants of fertility was applied to provide an answer to this question, thereby using Demographic and Health Survey data. Findings show that variations in both the level and pace of change of fertility between the selected countries can mainly be attributed to differences in contraceptive use practices, followed by postpartum infecundability, abortion, and less so by differences in marriage customs and sterility. Differences in contraception across the 4 Muslim countries are plausibly due to women’s education and income, religious attitudes and opposition of husbands towards contraception, and family planning program efforts. Due to the decisive impact of religion and patriarchy on contraceptive use in the 4 Muslim countries, it is questionable whether a Total Fertility Rate of 2.1 will be reached in all selected countries. date: 2017 date_type: published thesis_type: pre_master degree_programme: POPST tutors_name: Joop, B. de tutors_name: Groenewold, G. keywords_local: Egypt keywords_local: Projections keywords_local: Muslim countries keywords_local: Fertility change keywords_local: Fertility level keywords_local: Indonesia keywords_local: Nigeria keywords_local: Pakistan language_iso: en titleorder: Understanding fertility differences across Muslim countries: A comparison between Egypt, Indonesia, Nigeria and Pakistan dbi: 598874bec4476 imported_item: yes date_of_import: 2020-04-22 imported_from: http://scripties.frw.eldoc.ub.rug.nl/root/premasters/PopulationStudies/2017/aabbing/ import_source_file: theses-frw-20200422132455-598874bec4476.xml date_issued: 2017-01-01 citation: Abbing, A.
