"This thesis provides an in-depth analysis of the effect of place of residence in rural or urban areas on fertility rates in the \r\nNetherlands, with a particular focus on the mediating role of education. The research is grounded in the adaptation\r\nhypothesis proposed by Kulu (2005), providing a comprehensive framework for understanding the interrelationships \r\nbetween migration, fertility, and socio-economic factors like education. The study leverages secondary data from the \r\nGenerations and Gender Survey (GGS), a robust database that captures a wide range of demographic data across Europe. \r\nThe focus is on Dutch women and men living in rural and urban areas, with fertility measured by the total number of \r\nchildren these individuals have had. The sample was selected based on gender and age, with a particular focus on \r\nrespondents aged between 25 and 40, representing the period when individuals are most likely to have children and have \r\ncompleted their education. The findings reveal that women and men in rural areas have more children than those in urban \r\nareas. However, this difference cannot be explained solely by their level of education, suggesting the influence of other \r\nfactors, potentially related to lifestyle, culture, or economic conditions. The study also found that higher levels of education \r\nare associated with lower fertility rates, particularly in urban areas, where access to education is generally higher. The \r\nresearch concludes that the interplay between location, education, and fertility rates is complex and multifaceted. It \r\nunderscores the need for further research to explore these relationships in more depth and to identify other factors \r\ninfluencing fertility rates in rural and urban areas. This thesis contributes to the body of knowledge on the demographic \r\nconsequences of rural and urban planning and has significant implications for policy development."^^ . "2023" . . . . . . .
