Exploring the Perceptions and Challenges of Car-Free Neighbourhoods: A Comparative Case Study in Zwolle and Groningen, the Netherlands"^^ . "The car dominated the past century. However, to create more liveable cities with more greenery \r\nand meeting spaces, the role of the car in the neighbourhood is being reduced more often. The \r\ndevelopment of reducing the role of the car in both city centres and neighbourhoods does, \r\nhowever, not always go without resistance. While opinions are divided, it is important to \r\ninvolve people in the development of these neighbourhoods. This study, therefore, investigates \r\nthe experiences and perceptions of car-free neighbourhoods of residents in a car-free and a \r\ntraditional neighbourhood in Groningen and Zwolle, the Netherlands. For this research, a \r\ncomparative case study is done. In-depth interviews with residents of the neighbourhoods were \r\nconducted. The findings show the car-free component of the neighbourhood is not the main\r\nmotivation to move. The concept of car-free neighbourhoods is generally appreciated for its \r\npositive effects such as increased greenery and tranquillity. There are, however, still some \r\nobstacles. The parking space should not be too far away and there should be a possibility to \r\nenter the neighbourhood by car occasionally. Furthermore, high housing prices and expensive \r\nparking options could lead to the exclusion of lower-income individuals who rely on cars. The \r\ninadequacy of alternative transportation options further reinforces car dependency among \r\nresidents. Lastly, change should not be imposed on people. It is important that people can \r\nchoose where to live. This study, therefore, recommends attention to improving alternative \r\ntransportation options, considering social inequalities, adopting inclusive policies and \r\nimproving quality of public participation to create sustainable and liveable urban spaces for all \r\nresidents."^^ .
