abstract: This paper explores what factors influence satisfaction with public transport for wheelchair users in
Groningen through qualitative research. Through a literature review, several initial factors were
identified, namely Public Transport attributes and Built Environment attributes. Interviews were
conducted with five wheelchair users. From these interviews, several other factors were identified,
namely ‘autonomy’, ‘busy’, ‘driving style’, ‘transfers’, and ‘uncertainty’. Most participants were satisfied
overall with public transport, but all of them did encounter issues. The factors ‘asking for assistance’,
‘getting on/off the ride’, ‘uncertainty’, and ‘autonomy’ were identified as being important for satisfaction
and belonging to one cluster, as all of them are related to each other. Built Environment attributes were
also identified as also being important, sometimes even being make-or-break for some wheelchair users,
indicating that when looking at public transport satisfaction the whole journey should be considered.
Installing automatic access ramps for wheelchair users would give them more autonomy and eliminate
some barriers that wheelchair users face, such as asking for assistance, which was generally rated as
being low in satisfaction. Along with this, more thought should be put into how to make the whole
journey accessible for wheelchair users, such as adding sidewalk ramps or maintaining footpaths.
