TY - UNPB A1 - Tukker, Youri TI - Revitalisation of Groningen's inner city: transforming retail to day-horeca and its impact on liveliness AV - public Y1 - 2023/// ID - theses_frw4324 M1 - bachelor EP - 64 UR - https://frw.studenttheses.ub.rug.nl/4324/ N2 - This study examines the impact of transforming retail spaces into day-horeca establishments on the liveliness of Groningen's inner city. Data was collected through a literature review and semi-structured face-to-face interviews with residents, and the results were analyzed for each variable independently through Atlas.ti. The qualitative research indicated that residents were aware of the transformation and recognized an increase in liveliness, mainly attributed to the rise in day-horeca establishments. The findings showed that human activity and social interaction had a significant positive change, contributing to a livelier atmosphere. However, safety and nuisance exhibited negative changes, particularly related to increased interactions between cyclists and pedestrians. The diversity of people showed mixed results, with no significant changes observed. Constructive feedback from interviewees emphasized the importance of improving streetscapes and adding greenery to enhance liveliness. The study's limitations included a small sample size and potential bias due to snowball sampling and reliance on respondents' memories. In conclusion, the municipality?s adaptive strategy of facilitating the trend of transforming retail spaces into day-horeca was shown to be effective in revitalising and enhancing liveliness in the inner city, according to the findings. However, careful consideration of safety and nuisance aspects are crucial. The municipality can take measures such as improving streetscapes and incorporating greenery to further enhance liveliness based on residents' feedback. Future research should expand the study areas and sample size to improve generalizability and consider a longitudinal design to capture the transformation process more comprehensively. ER -
