"This paper delves into the influence of intergenerational financial gifting for home purchase on \r\nresidential satisfaction in the Netherlands. As the housing affordability landscape shifts and tax \r\npolicies such as one-time tax-free gifting for house purchase are abolished in the Netherlands, it \r\nbecomes essential to comprehend the emotional and psychological effects of financial transfers. \r\nBy employing several logistic regressions using data from the 2021 WoON (Woononderzoek \r\nNederland), this study examines whether receiving a financial gift from parents or in-laws and the \r\ngift magnitude have a significant impact on satisfaction with one's current residence and one's \r\nneighborhood, which are the two pillars of residential satisfaction. The results show, challenging \r\nthe initial expectations, that neither receiving a financial gift nor the gift magnitude significantly \r\nimpacts one's residential satisfaction. These findings challenge the traditional view that increased \r\nfinancial resources lead to higher residential satisfaction. Instead, they lend support to the \r\n‘have/want discrepancy’ theory, which states that the gap between desires and reality concerning \r\nliving conditions stays the same when financial resources are increased. Likewise, the results \r\npoint towards the importance of other factors than increased financial resources in shaping \r\nresidential satisfaction. Psychological and experiential factors could be more prominent \r\ndeterminants. These findings open an avenue for future research on residential satisfaction with a \r\nmore qualitative approach. Additionally, this research advocates for the need to conduct further \r\nqualitative studies on residential satisfaction to better understand how residential satisfaction is \r\ninfluenced by psychological and experiential factors. Ultimately, this study reinforces the age-old \r\nsaying: ‘Money can’t buy happiness’."^^ . "2024" . . . . . . . "Bas"^^ . "Lambers"^^ . "Bas Lambers"^^ . . . . . .
