"This paper investigates the influence of infrastructure development on the\r\nperception of liveability in the city of Groningen, taking the Groningen Spoorzone\r\nproject as its focus. The project is aimed at improving local and regional connectivity\r\nby renovating the main station and its infrastructure assets. Additionally, the project\r\nincludes a transformation of the adjacent area, among other things by establishing an\r\ninviting green space in front of the station building. This research investigates how the\r\nconstruction works associated with the project affect the daily lives of local residents\r\nand travellers by using a mixed methods approach, combining a survey questionnaire\r\nand interviews. The survey questionnaire collects data on several variables, most\r\nimportantly the distance of the respondents’ home address, the extent to which\r\nrespondents are affected by the project, the extent to which respondents think they will\r\nbe affected by the end results, and the extent to which respondents feel the end results\r\nwill impact liveability in Groningen. Ordinal regression is used to analyse the results.\r\nTo gain a deeper insight into how and why the project affects residents and travellers,\r\nthree interviews are conducted. The questionnaire results show no significant\r\nrelationship between any of the variables, except for a statistically significant\r\nrelationship between the extent to which the respondents think they will be affected by\r\nthe end results and the extent to which the respondents feel the end results will impact\r\nliveability in Groningen. The interviews show that, although the works may cause some\r\nminor inconveniences, the project causes no major nuisance to the participants.\r\nMoreover, the participants note that the outcomes of the project are likely to improve\r\nGroningen as a city and that the end results are worth the current discomfort caused\r\nby the works. In conclusion, the results show that the project does not cause major\r\nimplications for local residents and travellers, while the end results are likely to\r\nimprove Groningen as a city."^^ .
