abstract: The purpose of this study is to explore whether there is a difference in perceived flood risk between low and high flood risk coastal areas of the Netherlands. The central research question is: “To what extent does perceived flood risk of people differ between high flood risk and low flood risk areas in coastal regions of the Netherlands?” Zierikzee has been selected as a high flood risk area and Zandvoort has been selected as a low flood risk area. Preparedness, worry, awareness, experience, and trust have been identified as key elements of risk perception through literature research. The impact of these elements on perceived flood risk were measured through quantitative research. Quantitative data was collected by spreading surveys among residents in Zierikzee and Zandvoort through both digital and physical means. Results shows that people living in high flood-risk areas have a higher risk-perception since they are more worried, prepare more for potential flooding, and have more experience regarding prior flooding compared to low flood-risk areas. Results also show that, in Zierikzee, there is a relation between the theory about preparedness, awareness, worry, and experience. In Zandvoort a relation has been found between the theory about worry and trust. Future research can dive deeper into the strength and direction of these relations and see whether a relation is positive or negative and whether a relation between variables is strong.
