What this means in terms of urban planning however remains little explored, especially concerning existing urban environments, particularly in the physical dimension. So far visions of Solarpunk have either been set in fictional locations or not addressed the topic beyond referencing New Urbanism and environmental sustainability without diving into establishing any Solarpunk-specific philosophy of spatial design. How might SP translate into practical urban residential design philosophy? This research goes about answering this by first generating a set of Solarpunk principles related to urban planning philosophy from a systematic literature review of 22 articles and books. These were then explored via the “inform” and “combine” stages of research-by-design against the restrictions of an existing environment, resulting in seven designs of generic street segments within a reference neighbourhood and a comparative analysis across them. This results in a set of principles for applying Solarpunk within urban planning for designs of the physical environment and a framework for exploring institutional and process-related aspects of the genre's philosophies for a bright future. date: 2024 pages: 47 thesis_type: bachelor degree_programme: TP tutors_name: Verweij, S. tutors_organization: Fac.
