These weak fragments of the city are frequently characterized by a high percentage of social housing, low quality buildings or weak social cohesion, all of which indicate a lack of urban integrity within the neighborhood. Therefore, this research conducts a comparative analysis between the example case of Valeriuskwartier, Leeuwarden, and four well-functioning post-war neighborhoods in various Dutch cities. The differences in socio-spatial conditions are calculated using associated parameters identified in academic research as potential contributors to fragmentation and lack of integrity. The aim is to identify the socio-spatial conditions that most significantly contribute to Valeriuskwartier’s status as a weak fragment. The results indicate that the socio-spatial conditions of autonomy, security and uniformity in Valeriuskwartier differ substantially from those in well-functioning neighborhoods, possibly rendering these conditions catalysts of the status of a weak fragment and the lack of socio-spatial coherence in the west of Leeuwarden. However, no definitive conclusive remarks can be drawn without the addition of more cases or parameters to strengthen this current research methodology. date: 2024 type: Thesis type: NonPeerReviewed format: text language: en identifier: https://frw.studenttheses.ub.rug.nl/4601/1/S3747638WAVeenstraUnveilingFragmentationIntegrity.docx-1.pdf identifier: Veenstra, Wiebren (2024) Unveiling Neighborhood Fragmentation and Integrity: A Strategic Approach For Assessing Socio-Spatial Coherence in Valeriuskwartier, Leeuwarden.
