It integrated functions of safety, transport, recreation, nature, water quality and supply, economic activity, and aesthetics (Zevenbergen et al., 2013). This project was conducted along main rivers in the Netherlands, including the IJssel, and thus the Vreugderijkerwaard area near Zwolle. Little attention has been paid to the impact this integration of functions within the integral approach has on the well-being of local residents, and how these areas are used by these local residents. This has now been researched by a survey conducted amongst the local residents surrounding the Vreugderijkerwaard. It was found that the area was used in a diverse way for recreational activities; that recreation in the area, supported by the area’s aesthetics, is positively related to the respondents’ mental and physical well-being. Moreover, the safety from flooding provided by the area also had a positive relationship with respondents’ reported mental well-being. The study revealed that integrating functions in the Vreugderijkerwaard has brought various uses and benefits the mental and physical well-being of local residents. This gives insight into the success of Room for the River and can help inspire future water management adaptations. Future research can increase the understanding of the benefits of Room for the River for local residents by expanding the sample and adding research locations within the Room for the River project. date: 2024 pages: 26 thesis_type: bachelor degree_programme: TP tutors_name: Boumans, B.M. tutors_name: Roo, G. de tutors_organization: Fac.
