N2  - Climate change effects are becoming more prominent in Dutch cities. Therefore, Dutch municipalities have been developing climate adaptation strategies. Due to the complex nature of the city, climate adaptation is not straightforward and requires a more integral understanding of the city context. Therefore, both the Dutch government and academia suggest the implementation of a place-based approach to climate adaptation strategy development. This study explores the best practices for doing so through a comparative case study analysis of six Dutch cities. The results show that integral framing, multi-stakeholder collaboration, seizing linking opportunities and addressing local vulnerabilities are deemed best practices. Additionally, it was found that supportive organisational structures within the municipalities as well as supportive national governance structures are conditions for operating these best practices. Future research is needed to further explore the application of collaborative methods, the usefulness of online tools, the role of provinces and the necessary changes in national governance.
