"With the emergence of military conflicts on European soil, the economic implications of military expenditures have become increasingly relevant to study in the context of Europe. Using multiple specifications of spatial econometric models, this study analyses to which extent military expenditure has sparked economic growth across European countries over the past twenty years. The results indicate that the spatial lag of increased military expenditure negatively affects economic growth rates across European countries over time. When it comes to the in-country economic effects, military expenditure does not seem to be a significant predictor for economic growth, whereas total governmental spending significantly predicts decreased economic growth rates. Our findings add to the existing literature by introducing the use of spatial econometrics in the context of the economic effects of military expenditures across Europe."^^ . "2024" . . . . . . .
