"Abstract\r\nThis study investigates whether housing developments have increased population\r\ndensity in the Northern Netherlands between 2014 and 2020 to combat housing\r\nshortage and further improve liveable conditions for residents. Spatial and statistical\r\nanalyses are performed using quantitative data from Statistics Netherlands (CBS) and\r\nthe Dutch national register of addresses and buildings (BAG, Kadaster). The spatial\r\nanalysis reveals that over half of the new developments occurred within a 10 kilometre\r\nradius of the largest cities in each province supporting the central place theory that\r\nmost housing developments occur near urban centres. Both the linear regression and\r\nthe scatterplot yielded results showing a linear relationship between new housing\r\ndevelopments and population density. The findings indicate that within the Northern\r\nNetherlands, new housing developments are predominantly characterized as urban\r\nsprawl rather than the smart growth that the Dutch government aims to promote."^^ .
