abstract: The city of Groningen in the Netherlands is home to a considerable number of döner kebab restaurants, most of which are managed by people of Turkish origin. This paper discusses how these restaurants' personnel are embedded into and influenced by migrant networks. This is done by means of a case study based on concepts such as ‘migrant networks’, ‘embeddedness’ and ‘migrant entrepreneurship’. Results are based of qualitative research methods at seven restaurants located in Groningen’s city centre. The topic is discussed from an informal-network perspective, focusing on direct relations maintained by these restaurants and how these connections facilitate social capital and place attachment. The results indicate that these restaurants still rely on family relations and ethnic Turkish businesses for its entrepreneurial functioning. However, growing up in the Northern Netherlands has positioned both the first- and second generation on a bridge between the Turkish immigrant community and local Dutch societies.
