However, the international uptake of BwN is currently hampered due to scepticism about its actual feasibility and outcomes. This thesis analyses the basic principles and ambitions that underlie the approach and presents a conceptual framework that is used to assess two BwN projects in Hamburg (Germany) and Delfzijl (The Netherlands). The research reveals some conceptual weaknesses and 'loopholes' that jeopardize BwN to become a 'greenwashing' tool for rather unsustainable purposes. To play a major role in future water management, BwN requires sharper definitions and more large-scale business cases. Another crucial pre-condition is the transformation of the corresponding water management regimes.} }
