@phdthesis{theses_frw752, year = {2013}, title = {Visual design quality in inner-city urban space from the perspective of lay-people}, author = {R. Boelens}, abstract = {This thesis investigates the visual design in inner-cities, from the perspective of lay-people, by using interviews. The most important findings are: good design is very context driven: beauty only gets meaning from the lay people, in a perspective where they are constantly considering the elements of a new design in the context of the area this design will be in. In general, the image that emerges from the empirical data, shows respect for the historical traces of the past. Whereas in the theory monuments and heritage are given an important role in considering the inner city?s appearance, the respondents hardly call any monuments or heritage as attractive buildings. When it comes to new interventions in historical area?s lay-people seem to be more aware of their capabilities to use the historical appearance of the city as an argument to show their approving or disapproving attitudes towards new developments.}, url = {https://frw.studenttheses.ub.rug.nl/752/} }
