abstract: Last four decades women’s increased labour market participation challenged social institution to support in reconciling career with childcare, so the desired number of children can be obtained. Increased life expectancy makes grandparents an even more important source for childcare. Research shows an increased likelihood of additional birth when grandparents are involved in childcare (Thomese and Liefbroer, 2013). However, a geographical overview is lacking. The aim of this study is to investigate whether there is a spatial variation of grandparenting and its consequence on the likelihood of additional birth. Data of the Netherlands Kinship Panel Study is used to perform logistic regression. Results show that there is no significant difference in grandparental childcare between urban and rural areas, and between the Northern, Western, Southern and Eastern part of the Netherlands. The likelihood of additional childbirth does not significantly increase or decrease when the spatial aspect of grandparental childcare is considered.
