The success of the incorporation of the ESS Approach in the regions planning frameworks is investigated by analyzing policy, inter-institutional coordination, and planning instruments in regard to water-, land -use and urban development. Results show a strong emphasis on ESS within strategic planning especially these prescribed by higher legislation. Planning instruments also tend to be oriented towards specific ecosystem components. A coordinating agency may support greater ESS Approaches and their incorporation into (strategic) planning and legislation. Besides, vertical and horizontal cooperation, better- inter-institutional coordination and - consideration of land-sea processes is required in this regard. Finally, collaboration and the integration of innovative ideas on several scales is crucial for capacity building and ESS Approaches. date: 2013 date_type: published thesis_type: master degree_programme: EIP tutors_name: Prof. Woltjer, J tutors_name: Prof. Kleyer, M keywords_local: Institutions keywords_local: Strategic Planning keywords_local: Land Use Planning keywords_local: Coastal Zone Management keywords_local: Ecosystem Services Approach keywords_local: Integration language_iso: en titleorder: Use of an Ecosystem Service Approach for Linking Spatial Planning of Land and Sea- A Comparative Study between San Francisco and Hamburg dbi: 521f55943871f imported_item: yes date_of_import: 2020-04-22 imported_from: http://scripties.frw.eldoc.ub.rug.nl/root/ma/EIP/2013/swolff/ import_source_file: theses-frw-20200422132454-521f55943871f.xml date_issued: 2013-01-01 citation: Wolff, Sarah (2013) The Use of an Ecosystem Service Approach for Linking Spatial Planning of Land and Sea- A Comparative Study between San Francisco and Hamburg.
