There is examined what the main causes for different developmental paths are and what the outcomes of these paths mean for the cities. For this Drachten and Harlingen are compared. Both cities have, after a common point in 1950, taken very different paths. The outcomes are that the difference in growth mainly has to do with historical events and that regional factors did not play a significant role. Also, after comparing the economies of the cities their can be concluded that more growth is not always better. Drachten has, from 1950 till 2017, grown very hard and Harlingen did not. However, the growth in Harlingen is more resilient than the growth in Drachten.
